Authentic Assessment

More than hide-and-go-seek

This video is a beautiful illustration of how children invent games, explore natural habitats, connect with peers, and engage in active outdoor play. Teachers are always near, monitoring children by sight and sound, yet children have freedom to explore the natural world.

What you DON'T see is how teachers document learning that unfolds each day. We record anecdotes, dictation, and quotes from the children. We take photos and videos that document learning processes. We review learning artifacts from journals and experiments. We are well-versed in early learning standards and developmental milestones for young children. We combine all of this information to form an authentic, evolving picture of each child's skill development. This research informs the intentional aspects of our curriculum each day and provides a basis for our authentic assessment.
